Combustion: At the Heart of Our Fireworks and Alternative Fuels!

Combustion SimulationA series of combustion events were the center attraction for this weekend's July 4th festivities in the United States. Combustion simulations help shed light on fuel flexibility; this animation illustrates how hydrogen burns in a low-swirl burner. Information from these kinds of simulations provide experimentalists with insights into how hydrogen burns that cannot be readily measure in the laboratory. (Animation courtesy of John Bell, the Center for Computational Sciences and Engineering, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.)

In spirit of this work, remember to submit your scientific visualization for the Visualization and Data Analytics Showcase Program!
The Tech Program will be taking submissions until July 31.

#hpcmatters

Got a Minute? Show Us How #HPCmatters!

Join the SC14 video challenge and tell us why HPCmatters to you and/or your organization! To participate, upload a one-minute (or less) video to YouTube and tag it “#HPCmatters.” Whichever video gets the most likes, or wins one of the four competition categories, gets a FREE SC registration. (Limited to one free registration per winning video submission.)

Submission deadline:
September 15, 2014

Tech Program Officially Closes July 31!

There is still time to submit proposals for BoFs, Emerging Technologies, Posters,
Sci Viz, ACM SRC, and Doctoral Showcase tracks.

BoFs
The Birds-of-a-Feather (BoF) program, long an SC mainstay, enables community building and interaction in broad topic areas ranging from hardware and software technologies to education, policy and even research funding initiatives. For SC14, we plan to continue this strong SC BoF tradition. Specifically, the selection committee will focus on establishing a program comprised of timely and compelling BoF sessions anticipated to solicit significant community interest.

We have created an FAQ to help BoF organizers better understand what we are looking for and what accommodations we can provide. Please check this FAQ throughout the submission period for updates.

Emerging Technologies

Have a "cool" technology to present but do not have booth space on the exhibits floor? SC14 will once again host the Emerging Technologies Track of the Technical Program to showcase high-risk, high-reward hardware and software technologies that may significantly change the world of HPC in the next ten years. Submissions selected by a peer-review process will receive free exhibit floor space in a high visibility location for high impact demonstrations and discussions with the SC participants.

Research and Education Posters

SC14 is soliciting submissions for posters in cutting-edge, interesting research and education in high performance computing under these two categories:

• Research Posters: these posters display cutting-edge, interesting research and work in progress in high performance computing, storage, networking and analysis.
• Education Posters: these posters put emphasis on curriculum development and pedagogy, and best teaching practices of interest to undergraduate HPC educators.

Posters provide an excellent opportunity for short presentations and informal discussions with conference attendees. Authors of accepted posters will have the opportunity to prepare extended abstracts. A Best Poster Award will also be presented based on quality of research work and quality of poster presentation.

More information about all posters can be found at: http://sc14.supercomputing.org/program/posters
Questions? Contact: posters@info.supercomputing.org

ACM Student Research Competition Posters

SC14 is inviting graduate and undergraduate students to submit their work to the SC14 ACM Student Research Competition (SRC). Sponsored by ACM and Microsoft Research, submitted posters should display cutting-edge, interesting research in high performance computing, storage, networking and analytics. SRC is an excellent forum for students to share research results, engage in short presentations and informal discussions with conference attendees, exchange ideas with their peers, and improve their communication skills while competing for prizes. The top 3 undergraduate and graduate winners will receive prizes such as: monetary awards up to $500, a two-year ACM membership with ACM Digital Library subscription, winners' names and abstracts posted on ACM's SRC web site, and an invitation to the SRC Grand Finals, an online competition among the winners of conference-hosted SRCs.

More information about SRC posters can be found at: http://sc14.supercomputing.org/program/posters
Questions? Contact: posters@info.supercomputing.org

Scientific Visualization Showcase

We encourage everyone to consider submitting their best movies from the past year to the Visualization and Data Analytics Showcase Program at SC14, which has a new format this year. The top six entries will compete for the Best Visualization Award, with each entry presenting his or her movie during a dedicated session at SC14 in a 15-minute presentation. We are seeking movies that illuminate science, are of the best visualization quality, and use innovative techniques in creation of the movie. The accepted submissions will appear as short papers on the SC14 webpage and archive.

Questions? Contact: vis_showcase@info.supercomputing.org

Doctoral Showcase Program

The Doctoral Showcase Program invites graduating Ph.D. students in high performance computing, networking, storage and analysis to present their dissertation research and engage in stimulating discussions with the SC community. This program provides a unique opportunity for you, the graduate students, to engage and get feedback from other students, senior researchers and future employers! Don't be afraid to show off your HPC talents! Submit your application at SC14.

New to SC14 Tech Program!
SCinet is Seeking Proposals for Innovating Networks Workshop

Call for Demos
SCinet together with the SC14 Tech Program is inviting network researchers and innovators to submit proposals for demonstrations on innovative network topics like optical networking, software-defined networking, network architecture, etc. Submissions may be up to two pages with a description of the technology and proposed demonstrations. Demo results will be shared and presented during a special half-day SC14 Workshop titled, "Innovating the Network for Data-Intensive Science."

For more information, visit: http://sc14.supercomputing.org/blog/sc14-workshop-call-demos-innovating-network-data-intensive-science

Call for Network Research Papers

SCinet and the SC14 Technical Program are soliciting papers from past innovative network research projects that will be published in the Future Generation Computer Systems Journal. We invite participants to submit an abstract describing research from a previous year's demonstration in the SC13 Network Research Exhibition or the SCinet Research Sandbox; or a planned demonstration for SC14. Selected abstracts will be asked to present their results at a special half-day SC14 Workshop titled, "Innovating the Network for Data-Intensive Science" taking place on Friday, November 21, 2014.

Bring SC14 to Your Exhibitor Booth!

The Broader Engagement (BE) program engages more than 100 participants every year through the SC14 Scavenger Hunt. During this event, participants look for clues based on the information presented verbally and/or visually in exhibitor booths.

We are seeking exhibitors to participate in this activity in two ways:
1. Be a destination in the scavenger hunt, or
2. Sponsor a prize for the scavenger hunt winners.

For more information please email Shela Aboud at: Shela.Aboud@stanford.edu.
The deadline for submitting clues is Monday, September 1, 2014.

Do You Have a Hotel Room Yet?

You can book reservations on the SC14 hotel reservation site from now until early October. Remember: when it comes to reserve your home away from home at SC, earlier is definitely better. Reserve now for the best choice of rooms and hotels.

All SC14 hotels are located within a mile of the Convention Center, and the conference will provide buses up and down Canal Street. Rooms in a range of prices are still available, and free Internet access is included with all rooms booked through the SC14 website. Check individual hotel sites for details about on-site restaurants, fitness centers, and other amenities.

For complete information, and to book now, visit: http://sc14.supercomputing.org/attend/housing.
