The architectural trends in HPC systems show increase in heterogeneity, decrease in physical memory per core, increase in core count per node, and the possibility of having slower cores. These trends exacerbate the need to support hybrid programming models within the same system.
In this talk, we visit the dominant programming models in HPC systems including the MPI two-sided, the PGAS one-sided, and the accelerator-based models. We discuss how these programming models influence the application development strategy, for instance for maintaining data consistency, structuring communication, decomposing tasks and managing the data layout.
