ABSTRACT:

The term High Performance Computing (HPC) is used everywhere, has a certain cache to it and is difficult to rigorously define solely in terms of technical parameters. We can think of HPC in terms of operations speed, architectures, lines of code, power consumption or a named computer with a position on the Top 500 List. We link the term to the now almost forgotten concept of a supercomputer. Last, there is the unavoidable fact that today’s accepted HPC defining metric will soon become tomorrow’s definition of commodity computing, or worse, your new laptop. My talk will probe a little deeper into this concept of HPC while showing how SC14 can provide you a path for personal exploration. And for those who really want to go deep, we might even examine the humor of a conference dedicated to HPC and the ‘supercomputer’ but has neither item in its official name. #hpcmatters
