A Curmudgeon's View of High Performance Computing

SESSION: Invited Talks 3

EVENT TYPE: Invited Speakers

TIME: 10:30AM - 11:15AM

SESSION CHAIR: Robert F. Lucas

Presenter(s):Michael Heath

ROOM:New Orleans Theater

ABSTRACT:

This talk addresses a number of concepts and issues in high performance computing that are often misconceived, misconstrued, or misused. Specific questions considered include why Amdahl remains relevant, what Moore actually predicted, the uses and abuses of speedup, and what should scalability really mean. These observations are based on more than thirty years experience in high performance computing, wherein one becomes an expert on mistakes by making a lot of them.
