We exploit optical parallelism and wavelength routing capability of arrayed wavelength grating routers (AWGRs) and collapse the entire network topology to a flattened and single-hop interconnection topology. The AWGR is a passive wavelength routing component that enables fully connected all-to-all parallel interconnection without contention across huge (>20 THz) optical bandwidths. This project demonstrates wavelength routed optical interconnects that (1) scale to ~ million compute nodes and Exabyte/s bisection-bandwidth, (2) support all-to-all connectivity without contention or arbitration with the radix count 512 and beyond, (3) exploit ~ pJ/bit communication energy efficiency, (4) achieves 100% throughput at the rack and 97% throughput in a cluster at 100% data injection rate on every transmitter port in the system, and (5) demonstrates a chip-scale AWGR switch implementation using silicon photonics.
