Up Your Game with Tutorials at SC14

Whether you will be an SC “first-timer” in November, or you are one of the handful who have attended all 27 years, there will be a lot to see and do at SC14 in New Orleans. One of the wonderful things about SC is that it can be an immersive experience: throughout the week you’ll find opportunities for networking with colleagues from around the world, seeing the best of what’s next in research and technologies, sharpening your coding skills, and even letting off a little steam at the social events.

But first and foremost SC is a professional conference focused on providing you access to the expertise and resources you need to advance your technical skills. And one of the best ways to do this at SC is to start the week diving into tutorials.

The SC Tutorials program is always one of the highlights of the SC Conference, offering attendees a variety of short courses on key topics and technologies relevant to high performance computing, networking, storage, and analysis. Tutorials also provide the opportunity to interact directly with recognized leaders in the field and to learn about the latest technology trends, theory, and practical techniques.

The convention center in New Orleans is set to provide an outstanding tutorials experience. Attendees this year will find that all the tutorials are located together on the third floor, making it convenient to move between tutorials to make sure that you learn exactly what you need to be successful. And all of the rooms this year are spacious and well-appointed, helping to ensure that even the most popular courses will have plenty of room for everyone.

‘Hello world’ to exascale…

Whether you are a beginner or an advanced practitioner you’ll find relevant tutorials on all of the aspects of high performance programming from MPI, OpenMP, modern FORTRAN and OpenSHMEM to accelerator libraries such as OpenACC, CUDA, and OpenCL, and frameworks like Charm++.

If you are new to HPC, or just coming back to the field after a few years doing something else, Parallel Computing 101 provides a great overview of the state-of-the-practice in the field today.

For those interested in broadening their horizons even more, this year’s tutorials cover many topics including performance optimization and debugging, networking, fault tolerance in HPC systems, linear algebra, and a range of interesting tutorials relevant to the emerging field of big data:

If you are planning to take part in the tutorials this year, remember that tutorial access requires the purchase of a separate tutorial pass. Every tutorial participant gets a USB stick with the slides and handouts of all the tutorials with enough material to keep you learning until the next SC!
