SC14: How did you get started as a volunteer with SC?
Christine Cuicchi: I started small!  For SC01 I assisted my coworker, Eleanor Schroeder, with Student Volunteers which was an absolute treat. The enthusiasm the students had for the opportunity was a nice reminder of how their inclusion in SC was, and continues to be, mutually beneficial.

In 2007, the SC Conference launched the Broader Engagement (BE) program to serve as an entry into the HPC community for members of traditionally under-represented groups and students. Since then, the program has continued to introduce an increasingly diverse group of attendees to the conference and HPC.

In continuing the dynamic HPC Impact Showcase on the SC14 Exhibit Floor, the SC14 committee is pleased to invite conference attendees from within the industry to share their stories of how HPC has transformed their endeavors and given them a competitive advantage.  The Showcase will emphasize the tangible benefit of HPC in delivering innovations which enable companies to succeed within their particular market-space.

The SC14 Technical Program Committee has extended several submission deadlines.

SC14, the 27th Conference in the SC series, won’t get underway for attendees until November 16, but planning for the event is well underway. Held this year in New Orleans, LA, USA, SC is the leading international conference on high-performance computing (HPC), networking, storage and analysis; and provides the premier forum for the exchange of information in the global high-performance computing community.

An informal bet at SC05 over whether students could assemble a computer cluster using a screwdriver and pallet of components led to the launch of the Student Cluster Challenge at SC07 in Reno. One of those first competitors, Dustin Leverman of Oak Ridge National Lab, is chairing the SC14 Student Cluster Competition. Leverman, who also chaired the SC13 event, credits the competition with “jump-starting my career.”

A series of combustion events were the center attraction for this weekend's July 4th festivities in the United States. Combustion simulations help shed light on fuel flexibility; this animation illustrates how hydrogen burns in a low-swirl burner.
