Preparing for SC14

Whether you are new to SC or you've been coming for years, the SC Conference can be an overwhelming experience. Every year the Conference grows with more exhibits, more technical program sessions and more attendees, making it harder than ever to keep track of everything going on.

To start planning your agenda, start at the SC14 website. Here you will find descriptions of the activities and a detailed Technical Program Schedule that can be used to build your own personalized agenda.

When viewing the online Technical Program Schedule, once you select an event and want to add it to your personal schedule, just click on one of the calendar icons (Outlook, iCal or Google calendar) and that event will be stored there.


Get the SC14 Mobile App Now Available!

The SC14 App, developed by GenieConnect, is available now from the Apple or Android app stores. You can download it from the Apple and Android app stores (search for Supercomputing Conference Series) or use this link: http://showcase.genie-connect.com/scconferenceseries/.

The SC14 app will include the standard components from years past, but with new features for improved attendee experience. Features in the new app include:

  • Searchable event schedule for easy-to-find sessions and events
  • Attendee personalization, scheduling and notes within the app
  • New Orleans local guide to help attendees get around
  • SC14 updates to keep attendees informed and involved
  • Exhibitor directory with map
  • Ability for attendees to easily share their SC experience through social media
  • QR Code reader to quickly find SC14 information
  • Integration with ACM Digital Library so finding session speaker papers and abstracts during the conference is a cinch

You will need to log in to the app using your email address and SC14 Confirmation # as your password.  Logging in will allow your calendar, notes, and other in-app data to sync across multiple devices.  

You can even access your data online at http://visitors.genie-connect.com/sc14 to modify your schedule, export your schedule to your Outlook, iCal or Google calendar, and create a complete report of your SC14 activities after the conference. Visit the SC14 Mobile App FAQ for more information.

Transportation from Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) to Convention Center

For transportation from MSY International Airport to the New Orleans convention center or your SC14 hotel, you can schedule a shuttle or take a taxi, among a few other choices.

Taxi Service
Taxis can be found outside of ground transportation. Services for passengers with disabilities are readily available, though advance reservations are recommended. The flat rate charge for a one-way fare from MSY to the Central Business District is $33, or $14 per passenger if you share a taxi.

Airport Shuttle Service
Shuttle service is available from the airport to the hotels in the CBD for $20.00 (per person, one-way) or $38.00 (per person, round-trip). Three bags per person. Call 1-866-596-2699 or (504) 522-3500 for more details or to make a reservation. Advance reservations are required 48 hours prior to travel for all ADA accessible transfers. Please call in advance of your travel date for the specially-equipped shuttle to be reserved. Ticket booths are located on the lower level in the baggage claim area. www.airportshuttleneworleans.com.

Safety Notes

We value the safety of all SC attendees and want you to focus on enjoying your stay and work at the conference. To assist you, here are a few reminders and safety pointers to help make sure you have a safe and productive trip.

  • Please make sure to use the buddy system, multiple persons are better--don’t ever walk alone at night.
  • Make sure you have a phone on you in case of emergencies and you have at least one other attendee contact.
  • Please DO NOT WEAR YOUR CONFERENCE BADGE outside of the convention center. This is often a targeting mechanism for scammers and criminals.
  • Ask your hotel staff if certain areas are safe/not safe before going out.
  • Don’t leave your bags unattended.
  • If you are driving, take a second to double check that your car doors are locked.
  • Stay on well lit or major streets at night.

I and J to register and pick up your badge, which you need to wear at all times. We strongly encourage Workshop and Tutorials participants to register the day before the event to avoid long registration lines.

How SC is Organized

There are four main components of the SC Conference: the Technical Program, the Exhibits, HPC Interconnections, and SCinet.

The Technical Program has been the heart of the conference since its inception. The Technical Program provides multiple forums for sharing research, development and applications through a new plenary session, invited talks, technical papers, tutorials, panel discussions, workshops, research posters, an emerging technologies track, scientific visualization showcase, Birds-of-a-Feather sessions, and awards. A Technical Program registration and badge are needed for attending most of these sessions, while tutorials and workshops require separate registrations.

The Exhibit Hall is filled with booths featuring the latest technologies and discoveries from industrial and research organizations located around the world. To enter the Exhibit Hall, you will need either an Exhibitor, Technical Program or Exhibits Only registration.

Through a program called HPC Interconnections, SC provides a welcoming entry for attendees who may be new to the community or the Conference. A range of initiatives will help attendees get the most out of their time at the Conference and help them engage more deeply in the HPC community. HPC Interconnections comprises Broader Engagement, Mentors & Protégés, and programs for students, including the Student-Postdoc Job & Opportunity Fair, the Student Cluster Competition, Experiencing HPC for Undergraduates and Student Volunteers. The goal is to ensure that all attendees make meaningful connections to help them during SC14 and after.

SCinet operates a commodity network for attendees and an experimental network that showcases the latest, most sophisticated technology currently available. SCinet supports the high-speed network connections linking the Convention Center to outside networks and provides wired and wireless connections for SC attendees and exhibitors. A dedicated group of network experts volunteer each year to create SCinet, the conference network that has more bandwidth into the Conference than any other facility in the world and more capacity than many cities and countries. In addition, SCinet will also host an SC14 workshop, “Innovating the Network for Data-Intensive Science” which will discuss selected high performance networking demos running on the SCinet infrastructure during SC14 and technical papers related to such demos.


Social Events

There are three major social events scheduled by the SC14 Conference, however vendors are also known to hold additional events. Make sure to check with them on the exhibit floor, and watch your email for invitations. It's always a good idea to RSVP early for vendor events if you plan on attending.

The Exhibitor Reception held from 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm Sunday, November 16, Audubon Aquarium of the Americas (with bus departures from Lobby I) for registered exhibitors. The party is SC14's way of thanking exhibitors for their participation and support of the Conference. The party will feature local band Creole String Beans, access to all the displays and exhibits at the aquarium, and a showcase of local food and drinks throughout the facility. Transportation will be provided from Lobby I of the Convention Center starting at 5:45 p.m. An Exhibitor badge, party ticket, and government-issued photo ID are required to attend this event.

The Opening Gala will be held from 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm CT Monday, November 17, in Halls G-J. This will be your first opportunity to see the latest high performance computing, networking, storage, analysis, and research products, services, and innovations. This event is open to all Technical Program, Exhibitors and HPCI registrants.

The Poster Exhibit Reception will be held Tuesday, November 18 
5:15 pm - 7:00 pm CT in the New Orleans Theater Lobby with complimentary refreshments and appetizers. With the opening of the posters, this will be a key time to interact with poster authors and socialize other topics.

The Technical Program Reception, held from 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm CT Thursday, November 20 at the Sugar Mill, is intended to give the Technical Program attendees a chance to network and collaborate in a relaxed setting. Join us for a taste of New Orleans street food, local beverages, and entertainment. A Technical Program badge, event ticket, and government-issued photo ID are required to attend this event. Attendees are required to wear technical program badges throughout the reception, and badges may be checked during the event. The Sugar Mill is within walking distance of the convention center. Shuttle transportation to and from the convention center will run until 9:00 pm from Lobby I.


SC14 Conference Program & Exhibit Directory

When you pick up your registration badge at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, you will receive two printed publications to help navigate through the Conference. The Conference Program-at-a-Glance (provided to Technical Program attendees and available for download for all registrants) provides the schedule of all sessions and activities for the week. The Exhibit Directory provides a list of all exhibitors, and the sessions offered through the Exhibitor Forum. Wireless Access

SCinet provides free wireless network access throughout the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center for all sessions and the Exhibit Hall. The network can be accessed via SSIDs “SC14” or “eduroam.” The “SC14” SSID is the general wireless access SSID that the majority of attendees and exhibitors will connect to that provides an unencrypted wireless connection to the Internet. The “eduroam” SSID is an encrypted wireless connection that is authenticated with a pre-configured users’ credentials from their participating home institution.

SC14’s SCinet team has made special arrangements to connect to the eduroam service (education roaming) to allow eduroam-enabled users to connect to the wireless network. Eduroam is a secure, worldwide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community. Every institution (i.e., university or equivalent) that participates in eduroam connects its institutional identity authentication and authorization server (called RADIUS) to a national top-level RADIUS server of the country where the institution is located to validate the user’s identity credentials.

If your institution is not part of eduroam and you do not have an account previously setup before coming to SC14 by your institution, you will NOT be able to join eduroam server at the SC conference.  For more information, visit: https://www.eduroam.org/

Convention Center Directions and Parking

Parking is available at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center for a daily fee.
General Directions from the East:

  1. Take I-10 West to Exit 234C (West Bank/Highway 90).
  2. Continue on Highway 90 (the Riverfront Expressway) and exit right at Tchoupitoulas/South Peters Street. This is the last exit before crossing the Crescent City Connection bridge.
  3. On ground level, stay in the left lane and go to the fourth stop, which is Convention Center Boulevard. You will see the Convention Center in front of you.
  4. Turn left on Convention Center Boulevard. The Convention Center is on your right, at 900 Convention Center Boulevard.

General Directions from the West:

  1. Take I-10 East to the West Bank/Highway 90 exit (do not continue on I-10 to Slidell).
  2. Stay in the right lane and exit right at Tchoupitoulas/South Peters Street. This is the last exit before crossing the Crescent City Connection bridge.
  3. On ground level, stay in the left lane and go to the fourth stop, which is Convention Center Boulevard. You will see the Convention Center in front of you.
  4. Turn left on Convention Center Boulevard. The Convention Center is on your right, at 900 Convention Center Boulevard.

SC14 Shuttle Service

A shuttle service will be provided to and from hotels that are not near the Convention Center.   There will be four bus loops providing transportation from the farther hotels to the Convention Center. Operational hours will be as follows.

For those attendees with mobility concerns and are staying at a hotel serviced by our shuttle provider, New Orleans Tours, please call 504-236-3149.  A representative will work with your schedule and ensure that proper transportation is available.

Conference Store

One of the busiest places at the SC conference is the Conference Store, where you can pick up shirts, hats and other souvenirs. If you see something you like, we suggest buying it then as the store often runs out of popular items before the week is up. Really! The Conference Store hours are the same as Registration (see above).

Convention Services/Facilities

Local weather in New Orleans tends to be warm during the day with a high of around 77 degrees F (25 degrees C), and a low of 54 degrees F (14 degrees C) in the evening. Check the local weather forecast before you pack to be prepared for the climate. Please remember that the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center will be air conditioned and can be chilly- so dress in layers to make sure you are comfortable both indoors and out.

By the time November comes, hurricane season in New Orleans will be over. However, humidity is still high (around 70%, with potential thunder storms later in the day. Please bring your umbrella, dress appropriately, and check the weather.

Other Items

DRINK PLENTY OF WATER during your trip in and while staying in New Orleans. It will be warmer than many areas in the US and hydration is important.

Business Casual is the attire. Two days before your trip, check www.weather.com for the latest on weather and temperature. Please use this information to pack appropriately.
